This tutorial demonstrates how to create Liquid Patterns using the Lens Flare Filter.

Undo Note
You can step backwards at any time by clicking the top menu’s Undo Tool.



Please Note: Elements 8’s Orange Horizontal Bar

1/
Open a New (Solid White) Blank File and set the dimensions of your choice.



Tip
Centralise your image by snapping it to the top menu’s orange horizontal line.

Now, press Ctrl then tap the I Key: this Inverts the colours. Your canvas will now be black.

From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Render then choose Lens Flare. Then repeatedly apply random lens flares onto the black canvas; - dragging each flare to a different position - as illustrated below.

    

After you have applied your multiple lens flares, you are ready for the next step.

From the top menu, choose Enhance then choose Adjust Lighting the choose Levels - Ctrl then L. From the subsequent Levels dialogue box, drag the Black Point slightly to the right (to darken your image), then click OK.

Now, from the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Polar
Co-ordinates. From the subsequent dialogue box, set the following Polar to Rectangular attribute, then click OK. 

Note
For personal results, experiment with the settings, and create your own lighting.



Then press Ctrl then F to reapply the same settings, until you are happy with your result.

From the top menu, choose Filter then choose Distort then choose Shear. From the subsequent dialogue box, click points onto the black (Shear) line, then left-click and gently tug the points to form the following curve, then click OK. 

Note
For personal results, experiment with the settings, and create your own shape.

       

Tip
Press Ctrl then U, (Enhance, Adjust Colour then Adjust Hue/Saturation). Then mark the Colourise box, and alter the Hue and Saturation sliders until you see a colour you like, then click OK.



7/ Optional
To reduce your image’s size, from the top menu, choose Image then choose Resize then choose Image Size. Enter the following settings into the Image Size dialogue box, (or select a size of your choice), then click OK.

Congratulations, your Liquid Avatar is complete and is ready to save.

Now you are familiar with this technique, you can have lots of fun creating unique avatars.
